Intentions and Changes after Second Cut

We originally uploaded a second cut so that both of us would be able to go home and view the finished video and see if there was anything that we needed to do to it.

On watching the video we realised that there was one shot that we wished to change. In the last verse of the song, beginning "I'm leaving you...", we showed the businessman looking into the mirror, however the actual introduction of the businessman in this verse comes later when the shot of the homeless character pans behind his back and them comes out from behind the back of the businessman. This was the ideal introduction for him so we felt showing the businessman earlier looked out of place to us and seemed to break the pace slightly.

Another thing that we noticed when watching the video was that when the businessman disappears at the top of the escilator, tom as the homeless person turns around. This is fine but we did not wish for the audience to see that it was being played by someone else. When he started to turn you could see a profile of his nose, which in comparison to Simon's looks completely different, so we cut this shot slightly earlier.

We were now happy with our final video. We felt that since we had done these changes we had focused on the minute detail, which showed to us that we had reached the last stages of the video editing.

Final Cut Feedback

Positve

  • Shots of the businessman walking were good.
  • Some of the shots were quite well done, like the shot of the lorry obscuring the view of the businessman.
  • Quick editing added to the effect and mirrored the fast pace of the song.
  • The narrative was clear "About a man leaving his old life behind".
  • Good dissolve over the hooded man to the businessman.
  • Blurry effect was good (on escalator and at the end) - gave the impression that it wasn't all real.
  • Good shot going up the escalator - can't see the face of hooded man at the bottom.
  • Good blurry shot at end disguises the identity.
  • Not meant to be taken literally - like 'Lost Highway' (1997, Lynch) where the main character creates an alter ego that relives his past. Talks to himself in the speaker phone.
  • Very much telling a story, similar to other videos of the same music genre.
Constructive

  • The colours of the mise en scene were limited.
  • Probably too many shots of walking, there could have been more of a variety of themes.
  • Didn't understand the narrative - a few continuity errors.

Neither

  • Unfortunate about the overcast weather conditions, as this changed the videos atmosphere to a dull one, which is presumably an unintentional impression.
